Its good to read what everyone is busy doing in the gardens. Shocked
Hope the fall/winter gardens do well too.
I'm putting some compost out for the future "sallet patch". Grin

Mr Curtis, I hope your daughter does well in the Bible Quiz tournament.
Please let us know how she does.

Watch it rain so more. This is getting tiresome, I'm about to go fidget crazy. Raining so much even the okra won't bear. Plants keep growing but dropping flowers. Earlier in the week I planted 3 fresh rows of okra which should bear when the dryer air gets here. It's too wet to pull or till the old purple hull plants that the wind and rain laid low, so now they are full of fresh flowers and I will have another crop in the weeks ahead. I will dry most of these for seed and for eating. Rain, rain, too much for me and not enough for some. I wish I could help you that need by passing it on.

Haven't had rain now for 6 days and was able to get into the garden with the tiller and tilled all the rows except where Okra and peppers are.  Will make rows later this afternoon.

Pulled up tomato plants Saturday. No rain yet this month. Only thing left in garden are my 3 rows of late peas and okra. Watered the peas this morning. Okra is making like crazy, but just not filling out inside.      Don

I picked a cucumber! This may not sound like much but these are volunteer plants that survived the drought, then the torential rain. So hey! Good for me. On another note, I have about 4 lemon cucumber plants putting out. No big fruit, about half size to what it is supposed to be but fruit none the less. Considering I just "forgot" about them and havn't watered them at all I think thats cool! Means to me that these must be drought tollerant.

Hilled 5 50'rows, 5 90' rows and 23 70' rows.  Will not plant them all for fall, just easier to keep the grass out.  16 rows will be for corn and potatoes in the spring, will plant mustard and turnips on these rows to add organic material in the garden and get out what I need and give away.  will plant 2 90' rows TPPEPHP tomorrow, these will be the last peas I will plant this year.  Start next month with fall garden.

Today I sprayed around the garden fence with Round-Up, then mixed up some Crossbow, and drove over to deer camp and sprayed some broadleaf  brush and weeds, around the creek and some stumps.

Well today I set out 4 late mater plants.
Shelled a mess of green peas, Jackson Wonder butter beans
and broke up a mess of grean beans.
Found a few ears of corn for supper too.

This is really what went on Thursday; I don’t do much posting after sundown.  I’m a morning person:

a.m.
threw watermelon rinds and kitchen scraps onto a garden plot and turned the chickens to it, gathered okra from same plot

at another plot visited with immerging bean, squash, zucchini, cucumber, and cantaloupe plants, did a little hoeing and pulling, checked the hot wire around the watermelon patch, decided where tomato plants would go, and visited with the Desirables and Stuarts

at another plot visited with the sweet potatoes, checked for nut grass, raised the chicken barrier and trimmed the Bermuda grass which had grown tall beneath, tilled encroaching Bermuda runners around the plot’s perimeter, lowered the barrier back into place

at bean plot set out 5 tomato plants which Help Meet had started from seed

late p.m.
raked up morning’s trimmings for mulch

Hotter than fire right now so the garden isn't seeing a lot of action. Still getting honeydews but nothing else is producing right now. Hauling mulch right now. New house going in down the block and I got permission to haul off the chips from the ceder trees being cleared. Been making three or four trips a day early before it gets too hot.Just using the little 10 CF wagon behind the lawn tractor.

I'm still batting zero on my cantalopes.  I had one that the worms had not found but decided to wait till this morning to pick it.  Either a possum or a racoon found it last night so that one is history.

Finally we had a nice rain here in central New York. Some thunder and spectacular lighting from the sky. Seem to light the yard right up. So today I went and did a little picking. Garden is small this year but producing quite well even though water has been scarce.

Pepperman,
I see that you beat the varmints to that melon.  It’s a nice lookin’ chunk.  It shows Black Diamond, but that’s not likely since it’s an old cultivar that’s somewhat out of favor now days.  To our family, there’s nothing more refreshing after completing a hot, summer job than a chunk of watermelon.  Days of yore, it was eaten al fresco, under a shade tree.  Now days, you do it inside while the AC blows on you.  Either place, you need to be set up so’s you don’t have to worry about where the juices drip.  Enjoy!

a.m.
threw kitchen scraps and watermelon rinds onto a garden plot, turned the chickens out

harvested some watermelons, pulled some pig weed, visited young beans, squash, zucchini, cucs, cantaloupe, and recently set out tom plants (Beans and toms don’t look so good.  Bean-growing is not my forte.) studied where to put beans for next year, trimmed under melon patch hotwire (There’s a few possibilities left.  I started to just unplug the juice and see how long it would take for the varmints to figure it out, but my Colorado sister is to arrive in a couple of weeks, and she loves melon.  It’s going to be a close call.  Crop is long past its prime.)

visited with sweet potatoes, battled some nutgrass, visited knee high Brandywines
tilled beans

p.m.
nada!—ate watermelon, laid up, ate more watermelon

Pulled up two old rows of PHP and mowed down three other rows. Getting ready to plant late peas or contender beans. Maybe some fall squash. Picked a half bushel of peas from two rows that are still producing. Threw in a mess of okra, some miscellaneous small tomatoes and couple of handfulls of butter beans.

Think I will make me up some vegetable soup or something.

Up at 6:00 am this morning. Picked a bushel of speckled greasies. Picked a 5 gallon bucket of cranberry beans. Picked single mess of Lazy wife beans -they still have some time to go. Picked to 5 gallon buckets of tomatoes. Mostly Cherokee Purples, Early Girls, Black Amazons, Yellow & red tommytoes. Still waiting on the big boys to start coming in. Got a few better boy hybrids too. I'm sorry I did plant some non heirloom varieties this year. Please forgive me.

Nice harvest pepperman!! What type of bell peppers are those? They are huge!

Cleaned out several beds planting squash, snap beans and cucumbers for the fall harvest. Need to spray weeds around the edges to keep them from walking into the garden. Now only okra, TPPHPs and butter beans growing.

Mowed the empty part of the garden. Picked a 5 gallon can of bell peppers, and about 1 gallon of jalepeno peppers. Picked a couple lbs. of okra. I spent the rest of the day bush-hogging the back side of the place, to get ready for dove season  Smiley
