bigwad1 ... Just planted 100 ft. of Lincoln peas and 150 ft. of purple hull day before yesterday.  Got about 50 ft. of Jackson Wonder Limas in the ground too.  Planting more peas and beans than I ever have, lots of shelling and canning this year.   Cheesy

Whether I buy one or not depends on if you take trade-ins.  I have my wife but she doesn't work too well..... If I could trade her in for a decent working model, I just might be interested. Grin

New to the forum, stumbled on it while recovering from surgery. Best thing i found on the internet in a long time. Mr. Donald, you are great and the videos are greatly appreciated. I have learned more in the last week than you could imagine. I have about 3/4 acres I tried to farm for the first time last year. I planted 7 rows of purple hull peas about 100 ft long but as a newbie did not do something right. Only netted about 4 bushels from all the rows. Rain got me and the weeds took over for one thing.  The man that worked my field prior to me did not do a whole lot of weed control so I am fighting it myself. I have what I call here in Ga. as pigweed and boy is it hard to control. It has a seed pod on top and if you do not get it before it seeds then 100 times more comes up. Tried to pull up what I could and burn but still working a full time job and gardening in the evening limited me on what I could get rid of. I am limited on my equipment at the time with only a tractor, harrow and a front tine tiller and a similar push planter that is shown in many of the videos. This year I will be skipping a row as Mr. Donald shows so I can at least run my tractor between the rows and keep some of the weeds cut down. Anyway, I have used my uncles Taylor pea sheller like you are talking about and it definitly is the way to go. (got some peas from his garden as well to make up for what I did not produce). You can shell a bushel real quick. As soon as I can get some more equipment (would love to have a PTO tiller but cannot afford it right now) I definitly will be getting me one. Will have to settle for using my uncles for the time being. Goes against the rule my dad taught me long ago, if you need to borrow something twice, you need to buy one. Love the sight, keep up the videos Mr. Donald for us newbies and definitly will be watching this sight for along time.

Buddy ... I was amazed how well that machine works. I compare it to my pto tiller, each time I use it I have a big smile on my face.  Here's a tip if you're not an organic gardener, after planting and right before the peas come up spray the rows with Cornerstone (Roundup).  That will give them a good clean start until they are big enough to shade out the weeds.

Glad to have up with us.

Thanks, Will try the roundup as suggested. Boy did I have my hands full last year and I new something had to be done. I have seen a bunch of new toys on the videos that I want. I want a PTO Tiller, the row hiller, a cultivator, a pea sheller and ----oh wait I sound like a kid at Christmas time. It will be awhile before I can get in the garden now due to rain here off and on just about everyday for the past week and a half. Water is standing in the field now. Hope it will be dry enough in three to four weeks because that is when the doctor (I hope) will give me the green light to get back on the tractor an resume normal duties. I am already late with some of what I wanted to get done. Watching the videos is got me ready to go. Keep doing what you are doing and I really appreciate all the advice I can get.

Yep, after seeing Donald's video on the sheller last year, a meeting was called and it was a unanimous vote. All 10 fingers voted an immediate yes!, with both wrists also highly seconding the decision. I, as moderator, reminded them all that they would be responsible for raising the funds needed for the equipment purchase, at which time they decided they would have to wait a bit, till the money could be raised. After they informed me they would definitely remind me of it at a later date, if I should happen to forget about it, the meeting was adjorned.  Grin

Gail ... figure 4+ lbs. of shelled peas for every 20 ft. of row.  Guess it depends on how much hand shelling you willing to do and how many quarts of peas you want to put up.  With the pea sheller you can shell a lot faster than you can pick.  When Mary's home I pick, she shells.

Big D,
Ya got to warn people.  I put on the guards and fired up the sheller just to see how it ran and heard the most god awful screeches coming from the sheller that I have ever heard.  Seems the clearances between the bottom roller and sheet metal are so close that the rubber on the roller was screeching.  I put a bit of water on it and fired it up again and no noise.  Seems to be working great.
