Here's my take on the 4 most useful pieces of equipment needed to make just about any size garden using a tractor.
PTO Tiller ( $1200 - $1800 )
Middle Buster ( $150 )
Row Hippers ( $600 )
Cultivator ( $300 - $400 )
*Planter ( $100 - $1500 ) If you plan on making a really large garden

I have better control with the Row Hippers vs Row Builders. If all you want to do is draw rows then the builders are fine.

Cool..my garden is not as large as yours, only 60x75 so I think I will try the builders..it seemed to do a good job in your video.

I built a set of row builders a few weeks ago. I don't know how well they will work yet because I have not been able to use them much. But so far, with limited use, they seem to work very well for building rows. I think I will be saving up for a set of row hippers and a tool bar because ,I agree with Mr. Donald, it seems as if the hippers will be more useful for cultivating, side dressing/lay by, and hilling potatoes. I know my row builders will work for some of the above but the hippers seem much more useful.

Not sure why but row hippers and middle busters are scarce in central IL. I could get by with just a tiller, planter, and wheel hoe
but the fertilizer spreader, sprayer, and gator are awful nice.

Pretty sure you can find something in Peoria or Decatur... if not there, Bloomington/Normal area has some shops. |

Don't forget buy a grease gun and a dozen tubes of grease. That's the cheapest thing you can buy for the tractor and every year on it's birthday buy it another dozen. Now you know why Parts Store People don't like me. Good luck , GT.

yes, get a toolbar and neccessary attachments. Get a double tool bar and you can draw rows and furrow in one pass. lotsa options.

My father had just purchased a new Kubota L3200 with a Woods 60" tiller, when your tilling, you mentioned before about spraying weed killer out and then tilling it later on, do you have a lot of trouble with weeds/grass growing back or is it managable. He just picked his new tractor up today with the tiller and we played a little with it at his house to see what it would do, very pleased, did notice the more you till the same area the less you see of the grass and weeds and the more dirt you see. Watching your videos, you seem to use the tiller a lot.

Saw your latest video of the HOSS planter, I looked up the planter on the website and maybe I wasn't looking closely enough, but does the handles come with the planter. Since you have had the planter, have you had any issues at all big or small?

Farmer … If it’s a new spot that’s never been tilled then I prefer to spray with Cornerstone first. With that said spraying is not 100% necessary, just makes the job a little easier. The grass and weeds will keep coming up no matter what you do. If it were possible to kill every weed seed out there it would be nice but it’s just not going to happen. Think about what happens after a big rain. The area around the garden floods and washes all those new, fresh seeds right back into the garden. Just got to learn how to keep the problem under control. The Hoss Wheel Hoe and the Planter are separate items, you need both. Like most other walk behind planters it doesn’t like wet soil nor does it like big clogs of dirt. Take the deflectors off and add a short piece of chain. Deflectors pull too much dirt in front of the packer / drive wheel. Tell your father congratulations on the new tractor and stop waxing it or he’ll wear the paint off.  Donald |

I've got daddy's rear tine tiller, daddy's old push plow with a cultivator that goes with it, one of daddy's hoes that he left over here, $70 worth of seeds that daddy bought at the Co-op for me to plant, 13 tomato plants, 5 banana pepper plants, 2 cabbage, 2 squash plants and 250 lb. of fertilizer that daddy dropped off. I love daddy, but he's about to work me to death with his generosity. I know one day he won't be here to answer my questions and complement me on my garden. So I'm just soaking it all up as much as I can. He's only 75 years young this year and realize that every day is a gift from now on out. His father lived to be 92.

Equipment needed to grow a garden? Here's what I used to break up and plant mine with. Sub-Soiled the ground first. Then, run a disc through thoroughly and throughout. Planted with a two row planter and cultivated with a Ferguson steel arm cultivator. That's what I use on my half acre garden. All of this equipment is powered by Ford 2000 model tractor.
