Got the chicks out of the incubator and was happy to see I have feathered legs on the black coppper marans:

Here's one of the group.  We hatched 15 in all.  Seven Black Copper Marans and 8 Americanas.

What neat biddies tose are!  i am enchanted with the different varieties.

My Wyandottes will be here Monday.  I am not looking forward to being a hen!  They do that mothering so much better.  Maybe next year I will be hatching my own but under a hen.

John is looking at some lovely Heritage chickens that lay rust colored eggs.  i can't remember their name but the eggs are deep brown/rust.  the hens look laced.

I need to go look them up.

OK, they are Barnevelders.  Beautiful eggs and beautiful hens.

I looked up the Copper Marans.  Great eggs!  I saw none with feathers on their legs.  Tell me abt that.

These are Black Copper Marans.  They are rare in and of themselves, but the feathered leg variety are even more so.  The chickens lay a very dark chocolate brown egg.  Check out blackcoppermaran.org for more info.

They practically take care of themselves.  Easy maintenance pet that actually produce twice...  Eggs and poop for the garden.

Until you get the one that wants a back rub before bedtime, and will scream at you across the yard if they see you to let you know it is past their treat time, but they are not spoiled.

Hahahahahahaha.......yea, sounds like they're not spoiled. I knew it would happen....as bad as you wanted chickens, last year.

Here's an update on those chicks.  The rooster is HUGE to be 6 months old.  The hen has not started laying yet..  Hope she starts soon, I want to incubate her eggs.

Here's another update.  The hens started laying, and I've hatched a round or two of their eggs.  They grow up so fast!  Here's one of their chicks:

Well my old black and white hen that I have no idea what she is...hatched out 9 chicks the other day.  A goat stepped on one in the goat pen, and so now there are only 8.  I have 11 in the house that I hatched out, and another hen setting eggs.  So hopefully I'll have a bunche of new hens this year.

Yea for new chicks and natural mothers.  i would bet the clutches with REAL hens will be much easier on you than the bunch in the house if you can keep the goat off of them!

Please post pictures of new chicks and moms.
