Does everybody have problems finding parts for a Briggs Engine? I have a 5hp briggs engine on a Bolens Brand Chipper/Shredder and the fuel tank is junk. The Chipper/Shredder was my Dad's and it had been setting back in the old shop. I can't begin to discribe the frustration that one deals with when you start crossing part#. The prices are totally (-----------------------------). One place wanted more for a tank, than another place wants for an engine. But, yes you might know, the engine is the wrong Model # and will not fit the configuration of the Chipper/Shredder. It goes on----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------HELP/SOMEBODY/PLEASE

  I deal with Briggs Parts suppliers all the time.  Give me the info off the engine spec plate and I will let you know what I can get it for.  Tanks are expensive though.  I have a 5 HP I/C and they want 84.00 for the 1 quart tank.  I think that is about 4 times what I would like to pay.

Look around and see if you can find an old lawn mower with a similar tank that will fit.  I fixed one with the same problem like that once, the tank was a little smaller but it worked well.   I have heard of, never used, a product that seals the tank you might check with an auto parts store and see if that would work for you.

Auto Zone sells an epoxy for fuel tanks... it works really well. If it is rusted you can also get some stuff that you put in the tank and it will coat the inside which seals out the rust. It also works really well.

Cutn,
 You can "rig" a tank for it  to mount on the handle portion of the unit then run a hose from the "new " tank to the carb input such as a one or 2 gallon metal container that you drill a hole in bottom to accept a 1/4 inch copper tube, then solder that tube to the can after cleaning off the paint that was on the can, make sure you mount the can securely though. At oone time Brigg's and Stratton was the top of the line in small engines, but with mass production and short cutting in costs of procucing them, they soon will be joining the rank and file that Clinton, Pincor and a lot of the Tecumseh models has taken, EXTINCT. Their 10 horse vertical shaft engine that has the oppposed counter balanced cranshaft was junk from the start, the portion that surrounds the crankshaft  was made with a cast iron thin walled ring that will break into and wrecking the whole internal parts of the engine. I had a Swisher ATV mower that had one of those  engines on it, It didn't last long enough  to make a single pass in the front yard (800 feet) before I heard a loud Bang! and the engine locked up,  before anyone says anything it had the oil to recommended level too. I took it apart to see what has let loose and found that the balancing mechanism had broken and that inturn broke the cam shaft, mangled the crankshaft and where the cam shaft fit into the oil pan had broken out the whole side of that, plus it also shoved the portion of the counter balance out the side of the engine block, in other words the total engine was then junk with just a few salvagable parts left.

The Briggs engine I have is a Model# 130232 Type 3162 02 Code 90050707. The existing tank has several large holes in it. I found a used tank with rebuilt carb on ebay that was exactly like the one I have. Got outbid today, it,s gone ($61.00 + shipping). So, I pulled the motor today . The carb will have to be rebuilt I'm sure. This Chipper/Shreader has been setting for at least 16 years. After pulling the engine I used a brush, rags and WD 40, the unit looks brand new. I don't remember how many years my dad had the unit before he got ill. You can tell it didn't get used much at all. There are warning labels and decals all over this thing. Believe it or not , only one label has a small tear.

  Hey CutN,

  The 1 Qt. replacement for that engine can be had for 49.95 + 7.95 Shipping from Pat's Small Engine Parts The part number is BS495370.

  The original sized tank can be had for 64.95 + 7.95 shipping from the same place.  Part number is BS694315.

  Both of these numbers are the newer revised numbers.

  I tried a few and these were the cheapest I found.  Using those numbers you may do better.

  Good Luck!   Smiley

 Hey guys;
             Thanks to all. I pulled the engine and took it in to the big city of Conroe today. Can you believe it, the Western Auto had a brand new tank in the back. The regular parts guy was there today and he thought he knew where a tank was hiding out in the warehouse. Exact match, we couldn't believe it . They said the motor I had was about 20+ years old and rare as for as the support lugs on top of the head. One of the mechanics checked the compression and said it was like new and that it was one of the best Briggs engines made. He said that is why all the go cart people would love to have it. Thanks again for all the input.

I used to work for Western Auto in Conroe when it was on the corner of 75 & 105. That was my first job as a mechanic and I also did state auto inspection stickers while there. I then worked most of the used car lots of the day for a while. Glad to hear you got the tank
