Sprinkle those onion seeds and mix them into the soil with a rake or hoe. Water them in real well and in no time they’ll come up. Let em grow through the winter, giving them a little Nitrogen, until it’s time to transplant sometime in January – March. Planting the right type of onion is important. Long day onions in the northern states and shot day onion in the south. Neutral day such as “Candy” can be planted anywhere. When transplanting plant the bulbs approx. 1 inch deep with a spacing of 6-8 inches. Your onions will be ready to harvest around June – July.
Watering the seeds in helps with germination. Depending on your conditions you may have to water each day it doesn’t rain until they come up. After that you may not need to water quite as often.
Cabbage planted August 19 from seeds. Leaves are starting to wrap which means we'll start seeing little heads soon, just in time for New Year's dinner. Bug damage is not too bad this year so the plants are looking good. No insecticide had to be used on these.
Broccoli Plants planted August 19 from seeds. No heads yet but it shouldn't be long. Biggest problem was the cats dug up about half the plants. May try to replant some before it gets too cold.
